Spokane claims women’s title over WWCC in OT

Imani Guillory’s bank shot from the free-throw line with 44 seconds left in overtime proved to be just enough.

Guillory’s clutch shot gave the Community Colleges of Spokane a 76-73 NWAC championship win over East Division foe Walla Walla Community College at the Walt Price Student Fitness Center in Everett, Sunday March 19.

It’s Spokane’s third championship win after winning back-to-back in 1983 and 1984.

It’s also Spokane’s head coach Bruce Johnson’s first championship win in 32 years at the helm of the Sasquatch.

WWCC Women hold on to advance to Championship

In game two of the NWAC WBB Final Four Tournament, the Walla Walla Community College Warriors held on after an incredible second half comeback by the Skagit Valley College Cardinals 67-63.

After a slow start to the game, the defensive intensity continued through the quarter as the Warriors took a 13-12 lead to close the first quarter.

SVC went on an 8-1 run followed by a Walla Walla 8-2 run.   It was a quarter of runs along with 3 lead changes and 3 ties.

WWCC women headed to NWAC Final Four

EVERETT, Wash. — Heading into the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships that began here Saturday, Walla Walla women’s basketball coach Bobbi Hazeltine was concerned with her team’s inability to get to the free-throw line.

It was a point of emphasis in practice the week leading up to the tournament, and so far it has paid off handsomely.

After sinking 10-of-12 free throws in Saturday’s 74-63 opening-round victory over Clackamas, the Warriors knocked down 16-of-21 freebies here Sunday, including some clutch shots in the closing seconds as WWCC held off West Region champion Lower Columbia for a 63-57 quarterfinal victory.

Women beat Clackamas in First-Round Matchup

EVERETT — Cierra Jo McKeown scored a game-high 28 points Saturday night to lead the Walla Walla Community College women’s basketball team to a 74-63 victory over Clackamas in Northwest Athletic Conference tournament action at Everett Community College.

“Cierra Jo played very well,” Warrior coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “She had a really good game.”

Jade Skidmore added 18 points to the Warriors’ point total and Kate Ferenz contributed 10 as WWCC exacted revenge on the Cougars, who beat Walla Walla, 65-59, in overtime on Dec. 10.

McKeown and Skidmore named to All-East Region Women’s Team

The Walla Walla Warriors women’s basketball team was represented by two freshmen on the NWAC All-Eastern Region team. Jade Skidmore, who averaged 12.12 points, 7.88 rebounds and 4.0 assists, and Cierro Jo McKeown, 19.8 points, 2.52 assists, and 1.64 assists, were both named to the Eastren Region First Team. McKeown, whose scoring average was good for ninth highest in the NWAC, was also named Freshman of the Year.

The Warriors, 21-4 overall, 14-2 in the East Region, and East Region Co-Champs, will play in the NWAC Sweet 16 this Saturday, March 11th at 4:00pm against Clackamas at Everett Community College.


Warriors take East Region lead with win

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Cierra Jo McKeown splashed in 17 points and Jade Skidmore tallied 14 points and corralled 17 rebounds as Walla Walla Community College defeated North Idaho College 76-67 in Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday.

Kortney Hutchinson added 11 points for the Warriors. WWCC outrebounded North Idaho 55-36 as a contributing factor in the win.

WWCC worked its way to a 17-point lead at one point, but North Idaho cut that down to six, before free throws sealed the game for the Warriors.

Cierra Dvorak had 19 points to lead North Idaho (13-13, 6-9 NWAC).

Warriors clinch at least #2 seed

Walla Walla Community College had a good night here Wednesday at the Dietrich Dome in women’s NWAC East Region basketball action. The Warriors avenged a 66-47 loss to Columbia Basin, finished their home season a perfect 13-0, and clinched no worse than the second seed to the NWAC Tourney with an 83-78 win over the Hawks.

“This is so sweet,” Warrior coach Bobbie Hazeltine said. “And we just clinched second place. Our kids know the rivalry and they are just going crazy in there (the locker room).”

Marquel Greene poured in 19 points to lead four players in double figures as Walla Walla Community College defeated Blue Mountain 88-37 Saturday in Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball action here.

Cierra Jo McKeown tallied 15 points, Cheyan James burned twine for 12 and Jade Skidmore splashed in 10 for the Warriors.

Skidmore leads Warriors past Yakima

Walla Walla built a 49-33 lead over Yakima with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter Wednesday night in the Dietrich Dome, but the Yaks used a scrambling press to cut the Warriors’ lead to a single basket, 65-63, with 3:10 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.

WWCC responded by sinking 11-of-16 free throws in the game’s final 1:30 to preserve an 82-73 victory in the Northwest Athletic Conference East Region women’s basketball game.

WWCC women pick up back-to-back road victories

Playing away from the friendly confines of Dietrich Dome, Saturday Walla Walla Community College defeated Big Bend 79-50, and Friday the Warriors topped Wenatchee Valley 69-42 in Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball action.

Saturday Emily Hancock grabbed 11 rebounds and Jade Skidmore had 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Warriors past Big Bend (11-13, 3-8 NWAC). Skidmore and Cierra Jo McKeown each tallied 16 points to lead Warrior scorers, while Kate Ferentz pumped in 12. The Warriors had a 27-3 edge in points from behind the arc and a 19-8 edge in points off turnovers.
