Walla Walla wins NWAC Men’s Championship

It took 35 years, but Walla Walla Community College men’s basketball team finally got its revenge.

Walla Walla’s last tournament appearance was a loss to Tacoma in 1982 when its current head coach, Jeff Reinland, was actually playing for the Warriors.

After waiting more than three decades, Reinland and the Warriors finally got their win.

Walla Walla knocked down big shots when they counted and played lockdown defense down the stretch to secure a 93-75 win, its first NWAC championship since 1979, on Sunday, March 19.

Warrior Men cruise past Lower Columbia

The second Men’s Final Four match of the night featured a pair of #3 seeds out of the West and East in Lower Columbia and Walla Walla.

This was a classic matchup of offense versus defense, with the winner moving on to face Tacoma in the Championship game.

LCC’s defense ranked among the top 5 in the NWAC giving up just 74.6 points per game, while the WWCC offense is ranked in the top 5 averaging 90.6 points per game.

Warriors beat Orcas, on to Final Four

WALLA WALLA — Trying to convince his players at halftime that they still had another 20 minutes to play was probably the most difficult task Walla Walla coach Jeff Reinland faced here Friday night during the quarterfinals of the men’s Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.

The Warriors shot lights out during the game’s first 20 minutes, at one point led Whatcom by 40 points, 53-13, and took a 38-point lead, 66-28, into the locker room at halftime.

Warrior men win NWAC 1st round matchup with Pierce

Everett, WA – The 4pm matchup of the NWAC 1st round featured the West #2 Pierce Raiders (23-6) and the East #3 Walla Walla Warriors (20-8).  An early lead in the first half by Pierce was quickly overtaken by the Warriors thanks to an 11 point performance from Gabe Porter and a team FG% of 52% on 13/25 shooting.

Pierce did not go away even though starting forward and team leading scorer Hussayn Ford had to sit most of the first half with 2 fouls.  The Raiders went into the half down 37-35.

Porter, Bakalarski named First-Team, Reinland named Coach of the Year

Two Warrior men were named to the NWAC All-East Region team and Head Coach Jeff Reinland was named the East Region Coach of the Year. Gabe Porter, who was second in the NWAC with a 22.82 scoring average, and Caulin Bakalarski, who was seventh in the NWAC at 20.81 points, were both named to the First Team. Porter and Bakalarski helped lead an offense that finished fourth in the entire NWAC in scoring at 90.57 points per game.

Men fall to North Idaho

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Sophomore Night and the thought of revenge fired up a North Idaho College team here Saturday in Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball action.

The division-leading Cardinals (25-3, 13-2 NWAC) cranked up the heat in an 88-75 victory behind 57 percent shooting from the floor and 86 percent shooting from the line.

WWCC men sew up playoff berth

Walla Walla Community College took care of business here at the Dietrich Dome Wednesday in NWAC East Regions men’s basketball action.

Dalton Thompson buried a trey 40 seconds into the game and the Warriors took a 3-0 lead. Columbia Basin never threatened the rest of the way as the Warriors clinched a NWAC tournament playoff berth with a 93-55 win.

Men grind out win over BMCC

Walla Walla Community College broke open a close game in the second half to defeat visiting Blue Mountain Community College 82-72 Saturday in Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at the Dietrich Dome.

The Timberwolves scored the last 15 points of the first half to close to Warrior lead to 44-42 at halftime.

Caulin Bakalarski poured in 29 points, including seven of eight from three-point land, and Gabe Porter tallied 25 for the Warriors.

Strong defense down the stretch leads Warrior men to win

Walla Walla went more than three minutes without scoring to open Wednesday’s Northwest Athletic Conference East Region men’s basketball game against Yakima in the Dietrich Dome.

The Warriors, however, rallied behind Caulin Bakalarski’s 13 first-half points and a 14-4 run to close out the first half for a 34-28 lead at the break, and they answered every Yakima challenge over the final 20 minutes en route to a 77-65 victory.

Warrior men bounce back to beat Big Bend

MOSES LAKE — A night after a devastating overtime loss to Wenatchee Valley, 90-88, Walla Walla Community College went to a match-up zone and defeated Big Bend 70-66 here Saturday in NWAC East Region mens basketball action.
