Warriors top College Rodeo Events

The curtain closed on college rodeo action on Sunday at the Southeastern Washington Fairgrounds as Walla Walla Community College concluded the short-go of its annual College Rodeo.

The Warriors brought home two individual event champions, but the real winner, as always, was the Child Abuse Prevention Council.

Warriors bounce back to win game two over Shoreline

Walla Walla bounced back from a 15-4 hammering in the first game of a Northwest Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday at Warriors Field to defeat visiting Shoreline 6-3 in the nightcap.

Larry Dewitt and Brandon Wagstaff collected two hits each to key the WWCC win. Robby Heiberg pitched four shutout innings to earn the win and Jax Evenhus pitched the last two to earn the save.

WWCC women headed to NWAC Final Four

EVERETT, Wash. — Heading into the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships that began here Saturday, Walla Walla women’s basketball coach Bobbi Hazeltine was concerned with her team’s inability to get to the free-throw line.

It was a point of emphasis in practice the week leading up to the tournament, and so far it has paid off handsomely.

After sinking 10-of-12 free throws in Saturday’s 74-63 opening-round victory over Clackamas, the Warriors knocked down 16-of-21 freebies here Sunday, including some clutch shots in the closing seconds as WWCC held off West Region champion Lower Columbia for a 63-57 quarterfinal victory.

Brooks sac-fly caps 9th inning rally for Warrior Baseball

Taylor Brooks capped a two-run, ninth-inning rally with a sacrifice fly as Walla Walla Community College captured a 4-3 victory over Tacoma in the opening game of a Northwest Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at soggy and sloppy Warrior Field.

The Titans led 2-1 when the second contest was halted due to rain after seven innings.

WWCC is now 4-2 on the season.

Walla Walla managed just two hits off Tacoma starting pitcher Garrett Westberg through seven innings of the opener before scoring twice in the eighth. Reid Magnaghi and Colton Peha delivered the tallies with RBI singles.

WWCC Softball loses opener, rain washes out second game

Walla Walla Community College got one game of their scheduled NWAC softball double header in before the rains came and washed out the second game here Saturday in women’s softball action. In a see saw battle, Southwest Oregon Community College emerged with a 13-10 win.

The Warriors got off to a good start after SOCC plated a run in the top of the first. The Warriors answered with a three-spot in the home first. The Lakers responded with four in the third and tacked on three more in the top of the fifth.

Women beat Clackamas in First-Round Matchup

EVERETT — Cierra Jo McKeown scored a game-high 28 points Saturday night to lead the Walla Walla Community College women’s basketball team to a 74-63 victory over Clackamas in Northwest Athletic Conference tournament action at Everett Community College.

“Cierra Jo played very well,” Warrior coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “She had a really good game.”

Jade Skidmore added 18 points to the Warriors’ point total and Kate Ferenz contributed 10 as WWCC exacted revenge on the Cougars, who beat Walla Walla, 65-59, in overtime on Dec. 10.

Warriors beat Orcas, on to Final Four

WALLA WALLA — Trying to convince his players at halftime that they still had another 20 minutes to play was probably the most difficult task Walla Walla coach Jeff Reinland faced here Friday night during the quarterfinals of the men’s Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.

The Warriors shot lights out during the game’s first 20 minutes, at one point led Whatcom by 40 points, 53-13, and took a 38-point lead, 66-28, into the locker room at halftime.

Warrior men win NWAC 1st round matchup with Pierce

Everett, WA – The 4pm matchup of the NWAC 1st round featured the West #2 Pierce Raiders (23-6) and the East #3 Walla Walla Warriors (20-8).  An early lead in the first half by Pierce was quickly overtaken by the Warriors thanks to an 11 point performance from Gabe Porter and a team FG% of 52% on 13/25 shooting.

Pierce did not go away even though starting forward and team leading scorer Hussayn Ford had to sit most of the first half with 2 fouls.  The Raiders went into the half down 37-35.

Porter, Bakalarski named First-Team, Reinland named Coach of the Year

Two Warrior men were named to the NWAC All-East Region team and Head Coach Jeff Reinland was named the East Region Coach of the Year. Gabe Porter, who was second in the NWAC with a 22.82 scoring average, and Caulin Bakalarski, who was seventh in the NWAC at 20.81 points, were both named to the First Team. Porter and Bakalarski helped lead an offense that finished fourth in the entire NWAC in scoring at 90.57 points per game.

McKeown and Skidmore named to All-East Region Women’s Team

The Walla Walla Warriors women’s basketball team was represented by two freshmen on the NWAC All-Eastern Region team. Jade Skidmore, who averaged 12.12 points, 7.88 rebounds and 4.0 assists, and Cierro Jo McKeown, 19.8 points, 2.52 assists, and 1.64 assists, were both named to the Eastren Region First Team. McKeown, whose scoring average was good for ninth highest in the NWAC, was also named Freshman of the Year.

The Warriors, 21-4 overall, 14-2 in the East Region, and East Region Co-Champs, will play in the NWAC Sweet 16 this Saturday, March 11th at 4:00pm against Clackamas at Everett Community College.
