Strong defense down the stretch leads Warrior men to win

Walla Walla went more than three minutes without scoring to open Wednesday’s Northwest Athletic Conference East Region men’s basketball game against Yakima in the Dietrich Dome.

The Warriors, however, rallied behind Caulin Bakalarski’s 13 first-half points and a 14-4 run to close out the first half for a 34-28 lead at the break, and they answered every Yakima challenge over the final 20 minutes en route to a 77-65 victory.

Skidmore leads Warriors past Yakima

Walla Walla built a 49-33 lead over Yakima with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter Wednesday night in the Dietrich Dome, but the Yaks used a scrambling press to cut the Warriors’ lead to a single basket, 65-63, with 3:10 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.

Warrior men bounce back to beat Big Bend

MOSES LAKE — A night after a devastating overtime loss to Wenatchee Valley, 90-88, Walla Walla Community College went to a match-up zone and defeated Big Bend 70-66 here Saturday in NWAC East Region mens basketball action.

“Good comeback win,” Warrior coach Jeff Reinland said. “We were really down after last night. This was incredible. Our games (with Big Bend) usually wind up 120-116. They struggled against our match up zone and we defended better.”

WWCC women pick up back-to-back road victories

Call them road Warriors.

Playing away from the friendly confines of Dietrich Dome, Saturday Walla Walla Community College defeated Big Bend 79-50, and Friday the Warriors topped Wenatchee Valley 69-42 in Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball action.

Saturday Emily Hancock grabbed 11 rebounds and Jade Skidmore had 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Warriors past Big Bend (11-13, 3-8 NWAC). Skidmore and Cierra Jo McKeown each tallied 16 points to lead Warrior scorers, while Kate Ferentz pumped in 12. WWCC womens hoops team plans “Pink Week’ Fundraiser

What was a one-night event for six years has grown into Pink Week for the Walla Walla Community College Women’s Basketball Team.

The Warriors don pink uniforms to highlight cancer awareness for the games and raise funds for the Providence St. Mary Cancer Foundation Fund for Special Needs, said Head WWCC Women’s Basketball Coach/Assistant Athletic Director Bobbi Hazeltine.

Businesses donate gift baskets that the women’s team raffles off. Their goal is to top the $1,127 they presented in 2016 to Chris Garratt, executive director of Providence St. Mary Medical Center Breast Cancer Foundation.

PASCO — Gabe Porter fired in 22 points and Caulin Bakalarski 21 as Walla Walla Community College crushed Columbia Basin 95-69 in Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball action here Saturday.

Warrior men remain in 1st place after beating Chukars

After a cold-shooting first half, Walla Walla heated up in the second half and shot down Treasure Valley 92-87 Wednesday night in a men’s Northwest Athletic Conference East Region basketball game in the Dietrich Dome.

The Warriors shot just 29 percent from the field overall and 28 percent from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes. But they connected on 50 percent of their shots overall and 52 percent from downtown after the intermission.

Trailing by 13 points, Walla Walla used a 14-2 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to fuel a 74-69 comeback victory over Treasure Valley Wednesday night in a Northwest Athletic Conference East Region women’s basketball game in the Dietrich Dome.

Cierra Jo McKeown drained back-to-back 3-point baskets during that surge and Emily Hancock, Kate Ferenz, Jade Skidmore and Makenzie Reddish chipped in as the Warriors roared back to take a 10-point lead with time becoming a factor.

School record three-pointers leads Men to win over BMCC

PENDLETON — Walla Walla Community College turned on the jets for a 108-94 Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory at Blue Mountain Community College Saturday.

The Warriors ripped twine with 24 three-pointers, a school record, on 52 attempts. Dalton Thompson knocked down 8 of 21 attempts from behind the arc, while Caulin Bakalarski hit 7 of 13 and Gabe Porter 5 of 11.

“They played a triangle and 2 defense on Gabe Porter and Colin Bakalarski that left Dalton Thompson wide open,” said Warriors coach Jeff Reinland. “They didn’t really hold Gabe and Colin down.
